Are You Active?
Are You Active?
If you are an active elderly person? If you are, then you are very fortunate. As we age, our bodies tend to break down and we may feel like we are at the active level as we used to be. So, if you are a hiker, bicyclist, or jogger, you should definitely count your blessings because not everyone in their 50s, 60s, or 70s are able to perform these tasks. It is difficult for those of us who are young to think about our bodies not being able to handle the rigorous workouts that we put them through. This is not meant to discourage young people from exercising, because if you do have a good healthy exercise routine and diet your body will age much better than if you are unhealthy. This, however, does not mean that you will not experience difficulties as your body ages; it’s a part of life. You may practice having a healthy diet low in sodium and cholesterol to help prevent heart disease and stroke, or you may exercise vigorously to help keep good blood flow to prevent clots or heart attack, but there can still be unforeseen consequences even living a healthy life like this.
Challenges Faced in an Active Life
Having a vigorous exercise regimen is wonderful and is definitely good for your body, however, sometimes our bodies can’t quite handle what we do to them. It is not uncommon to be more prone to breaking bones, pulling muscles, or separating tendons. Many healthy elderly people end up having to have knee replacement surgery after a nasty fall or twisting their knee. It does not mean that you should not be active or that you shouldn’t stay in shape as you age, what it means is that you should expect the unexpected, which could be an injury that potentially requires some form of surgery and therapy.
